Welcome to Virtual Histories, a project that brings to life four coastal landscapes, and allows you to explore past worlds. Each of the four reconstructions has been created in collaboration with communities and their local museums, and the projects span the north, south, east and west of Scotland. The four models recreate different historical periods and locations, building upon projects undertaken at archaeological sites threatened by coastal erosion.
The models have been built using archaeological and historical evidence, and survey data collected in the field. This has allowed the reconstruction of the landscapes and buildings that you can walk around – clicking on information hotspots to learn more about the sites.
On this website, you can read about the four sites and can download your own viewer to access the models.
The goal of the project was to construct Explorer Stations in the four partner museums, and this website provides some background to the project and gives a taste of what has been created.
